When he was a teenager, Zhao worked a number of jobs to help support his family - including flipping burgers at McDonald's for $4.5 Canadian dollars an hour and working overnight shifts at a gas station. His mother was a teacher, and his father was an academic who got a job at the University of British Columbia. He lived there until the age of 12 in the late 1980s when his family moved to Vancouver, Canada. Zhao was born in Jiangsu, China, and lived in a rural village after his father was banished there for his bourgeois leanings.
